The “heart and soul of Gavin,” PR pro Ryan Tarkowski is stepping into the spotlight this week.
What brought you to Gavin?
After years of working in TV and radio news, I realized two things: I love telling great stories and I hate listening to police scanners. I had some public relations experience under my belt, so I started searching for an agency with cool clients doing great things in the community. Gavin met those criteria and earned bonus points for its causal dress code. So here I am!
What’s the most interesting part about the work you do?
The most interesting part of my job is the variety of work I get to do every day. A lot of jobs say “no two days are the same,” but with public relations at an agency like Gavin, it’s really true. The best days are when we secure awesome coverage for our clients and I get to be on-site during their interview.
What advice would you give someone looking to join the world of PR?
Don’t be afraid to pick up the telephone. Whether you’re pitching a news story on behalf of a client or applying for a job, email and social media are great tools but they’re also easy to ignore. Similarly, when your phone rings, answer it! You don’t want to miss an opportunity because you let a call go to voicemail.
